August

Back To School Picnic: The Friday before school starts, we get together at Mountain View Park for a picnic. All new and returning McKinley families are invited and Teachers and Staff attend as well. Come get reacquainted with or meet new friends and have your questions answered.

Kindergarten Krackers: On the first day of school during recess, PTA provides juice and cookies to the Kindergarten children to help ease them into their first day.

PTA Welcome Breakfast: The end of the first week of school is the last time we get to walk our children to their line. Please join us at 8:30 under the Lunch Shelter to celebrate getting through that first week back and to find out about what PTA has planned for the school. Food and coffee will be provided. If there is something that you think you would like to help with during the year, sign up sheets will be available, and we would love to have your involvement!

First Friday Popsicles: At the end of the day on the First Friday, the PTA provides popsicles to all students in honor of the completion of their first week of school.

September

McKinley Fall Family Picnic: Early September, we host our Welcome Back to School Picnic. During this event, families are welcome to bring their own dinners, spread out blankets and chat and eat with the McKinley community. The playground will be open.

Dunkin’ Day @ McK: Come before school starts, from 7:30 to 8:15, and enjoy some breakfast treats while playing basketball or other games with our McKinley kids!

Reflections: This is an annual art contest sponsored by State and National PTA. Children are encouraged to submit entries in the following categories: musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance, videography, and literature. This year’s theme is “The World Would Be A Better Place If..." All McKinley entries will be displayed at our Reflections reception in the school library, and kids and parents are invited to come check them out!

October

Start The Art Week: This is an annual statewide celebration of the arts in our schools during the week of October 5th. To get the kids excited about the arts, every day during recess, there is a different kind of art that the kids can participate in. We are looking for a lot of creative parents to help this week!

International Walk to School Day:
Children (and their parents) all over the world are encouraged to walk to school. This international program promotes fitness and environmental awareness, while developing a greater sense of community. McKinley will participate by setting up greeting/refreshment tables on the key street corners of our school. Kids and their parents can enjoy breakfast treats as they walk to school.

Red Ribbon Week: Red Ribbon Week is a drug prevention program. All week long we have fun activities to help encourage healthy living, promote self-esteem, and the courage to make good choices.

Pumpkin Patch: A favorite event for McKinley kids! We turn our grass field into a wonderful pumpkin patch with pumpkins, bales of hay, scarecrows, and other fall decorations.Every child gets to pick out their own free pumpkin and take it home. We need help unloading the pumpkins and hay bales, and setting up, plus a few people during the school day to assist the children with making their pumpkin picking decisions and taking pictures.

November

College Month:
Our “I’m Going to College” program helps inspire McKinley kids toward higher education.Throughout November, students have the chance to collect spare change to contribute to our Alumni Scholarship. This scholarship goes to a Burroughs High School Senior who went to McKinley.College Month also includes a 5th grade field trip to UCLA, and a college day where kids are encouraged to wear shirts or jackets with their favorite college name or colors.

December

Holiday Baskets:
Each year our PTA “adopts” 6 needy families in Burbank. We collect food and toiletry items in the classrooms, and the staff provides gifts for the children and their families. PTA volunteers and some of our 5th graders gather and sort the items and deliver them to the families. It is a heart-warming experience and an opportunity for our students to learn the importance of sharing and giving.

January

Variety Show Auditions: Students of ALL ages are encouraged to come alone or in groups to audition their talents for our show.  Auditions will be held, followed by weekly rehearsals throughout February, with show performances in early March. We could use your experience in production, set design, lighting, video-recording, etc… and if you don’t have that experience, there is still plenty to do.

Pajama Party Read In Night: Spend some time as a family (and friends), listen to stories, read books, work on a craft and have snacks. Visit themed reading areas and guest readers.

McKinley Day:
On January 27, we will celebrate our school's namesake, President William McKinley, and his birthday. Kids make tissue paper carnations, as President McKinley was known for always wearing one. We also have coloring pages with interesting William McKinley Facts.

February

Valentine’s Day Party: The school district does not allow classroom birthday parties, so the PTA does a fabulous Valentine’s Day party in each classroom. We need volunteers to help pass out ice cream to all the classrooms for the children to enjoy while sharing their valentines cards.

Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair is held during the week of Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences so everyone has the chance to share the love of reading with their children. This is also Literacy Week at McKinley. Teachers provide a ‘Wish List’ for classroom books and this is a great time to fulfill those wishes. We need volunteers to help with set up, work during the weekdays and after school, and then to dismantle the Book Fair. The Book Fair provides more books for the library and the classrooms and helps to fund our Accelerated Reader Program at school.

March

Variety Show: Help is needed in all areas of this production…. with the sound system… with props… decorations…selling ads for the program… the concession stand… with rehearsals… backstage the night of the show. If you want to help, we’ve got a job for you. The show performances will be in early March.

Dunkin’ Day @ McK: Our second “Dunkin’ Day @ McK” will be held on. Come for an hour before school starts, from 7:30 to 8:15, and enjoy some breakfast treats while playing basketball with our McKinley kids!

April

Play-a-thon: During recess, we hold the “Play-a-thon” fundraiser. In the week leading up to it, the kids get family and friends to sponsor them as they pledge to play various games during recess (obstacle course, handball, basketball, dancing etc.). Teachers and staff come out to play with them and it’s a lot of fun.

Earth Week Can/Bottle Stomp:
During Earth Week, we collect clean aluminum cans and #1 plastic bottles, and then on Friday April 21st, we spread them all on the blacktop and the children stomp their hearts out. This LOUD event is a lot of fun. All the recycling is then turned in for money to support our programs.

Honorary Service Awards: Awards are given in the spring to members of each school’s PTA, parents, or a staff member, who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. This committee decides who represents McKinley at the annual district-wide dinner in April. A committee will be appointed at the beginning of the 2017 to review all nominees, and anyone in the PTA can nominate someone. This committee decides who from McKinley will be honored at the annual district-wide dinner in April.

Children’s Day: At the end of the month we will celbrate El Dia Del Nino, a national holiday in Mexico, and celebrated around the world. We'll do something to make our McKinley kids feel special too.

May

Staff Appreciation Week: This week we thank the people who teach and guide our children. We have done breakfasts, lunches, gift baskets, spa days, car washes….. we try to do a little something different every day, and our Teachers and Staff are very grateful.

Spring Family Night: This free event is a fun wrap-up to the 2016-2017 school year as a McKinley community.  Families are welcome to bring their own food or purchase something from our concessions. We will have music and fun as we near the end of the year. We will need help in all areas of planning, setting up, ticket sales, food sales, etc.

Scholarship: We give a scholarship to a graduating senior at Burroughs HS who went to McKinley. In May, the recipient of the scholarship comes back to McKinley and, in an assembly for the 3rd-5th graders, speaks about his or her years at McKinley and gives advice to the students.

5th Grade Promotion: The fifth graders celebrate the completion of their elementary years. The PTA provides 5th graders and their parents decorations and a little reception of drinks and tea cakes after their Promotion to Middle School ceremony.

5th grade Kickball Game: The PTA distributes treats to all students as they watch our 5th graders take on the Staff in a Kick Ball game!

If you would like to help, participate or have questions about anything listed here, please let us know.
